National Suicide Prevention Day

National Suicide Prevention Day is September 10th. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented. In partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) have created free resources to aid in the prevention of suicide. We would like to encourage you to take 5 minutes of your day to help prevent suicide by following this link.

Here are some facts about substance use disorder (SUD) & suicide:

  1. Substance use is a risk factor for both fatal and nonfatal overdoses, suicide attempts, and death by suicide.
  2. SUD are among the most frequent psychiatric disorders found in suicide.
  3. Individuals with alcohol dependence and who use drugs have a 10-14 times greater risk of death by suicide compared with the general population.
  4. Individuals with substance use disorder are 6 times more likely to complete suicide than those without.
  5. Over 70% of adolescent suicides may be complicated by drug and alcohol use and dependence.
